【ZHOU HUIJIU FORUM】Invited Speaker: Prof. Wolfgang Jäger

Time:2017/10/16 17:35:41

Prof. Wolfgang Jäger, an excellent scientist who was retired from teaching posts as professor at CAU Kiel (Germany) but still devotes himself to research, was invited to participate in ZHOU HUIJIU FORUM in the School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU). Many professors and students flocked to listen to his presentation entitled ‘Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy of Functional Nanomaterials’ on October 11th, 2017.

This report was expounded from the following aspects. Firstly, Prof. Wolfgang Jäger talked about some fundamental aspects in aberration-corrected TEM, including resolution, precision and spherical aberration correction. Then, recent applications to investigations of surface and interface phenomena of TMDC layered crystals and nanostructured oxide semiconductors were summarized and illustrated. Also, ‘defect engineering’ of strained layer systems were designed to enormously enhance the efficiency of solar cells. At the end of lecture, MSE research landscape in German to meet grand challenges in various fields such as energy and infrastructure was discussed.

Prof. Wolfgang gave us a wonderful speech with rich content and witty language, arousing extensive discussions and active questions from the audiences. His rigorous attitudes and quick thinking is worthy of study and advocation.

Profile:

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Jäger has been a staff scientist at Research Center Jülich, Germany from 1979 to 1987, and became a full professor at CAU Kiel since 1996. Currently, he is formally retired from teaching duties, but is still very active on research. His research interests include microstructure of materials and electron microscopy study of functional materials etc. Wolfgang Jäger once served as head of ‘AG Mikrostrukturanalytik’ / ‘Microanalysis of Materials Group’ and 'CMA Center for Materials Analysis’ at CAU Kiel. He carried out interdisciplinary focus project ‘Nanoanalytics with electrons for materials science and surface science’ and developed interdisciplinary CAU Laboratory for Analytical TEM, thus worked as director of the Institute for Materials Science. He has written more than 300 scientific publications, including publications in scientific journals, review articles, book articles and conference publications. Numerous invited and plenary presentations have been done at international conferences, in advanced scientific schools and institutes. He also offers cooperation and technology transfer with research institutions and industry in the fields of ‘materials analyses by methods of electron microscopy and further methods for the microanalysis of materials’ and ‘R & D projects in research and development for materials and devices’.
